About Us

Stony Creek Studio can be reached by an easy fifteen minute's drive north east of Mudgee on the Wollar Road, crossing the rolling foothills of the Great Divide. Our home and purpose-built studio are made of round poles and mud bricks, where at least 30 of our works are on display. We also have numerous works on show at various local art galleries, wineries, gift and coffee shops.

JUDY KURTZ:

Judy's style has developed from her training in the school of 'tonal impressionism', under the tuition of the late Fred Martin. She applies the paint with broard brushstrokes to maintain a 'loosness', but in a way the eye reads detail. She was a member of the Parramatta Arts Society before moving to the bush to paint it in all it's moods. Still life, floral and portrature are also a part of Judy's repertoire.RECENT AWARDS:2001-First-Mudgee Rotary Exhibition-Still Life2001-First-Mudgee Rotary Exhibition-Architecture2002-First-'Characters of Mudgee' Exhibition2003-First-Mudgee Rotary Exhibition-Oils2003-Best work by local artist- Mudgee Rotary Exhibition2003-Most outstanding work in exhibition-Mudgee Rotary.2004-First-Merriwa 'Festival Of Fleeces' Art award2004-Finalist-$35000 Country Energy Art Prize

ROSS KURTZ:

Ross' earlier work comprised mostly pen and pencil. In the last fifteen years he has oils, watercolours, pastels and acrylics. More recently he is combining his experience of oils and watercolours pushing acrylics to their limit, laying impasto over washes to 'characterize' the colours of the bush.RECENT MAJOR AWARDS:2002-First- Mudgee Rotary Exhibition-Acrylic2002- Most outstanding work by local artist2003-First-'Characters of Mudgee' Exhibition2003-First-Mudgee Rotary Exhibition2003-Highly Commended- Mudgee Rotary.2004-Highly Commended-Merriwa 'Festival Of Fleeces' Art Award2004-Finalist-$35000 Country Energy Art Award2007-Finalist-$35000 Country Energy Art AwardIf you would like more information about our business or range of products, please

FINALIST IN COUNTRY ENERGY AWARD:

The painting 'For Sale' is featured by Trevor Lang in his editorial in the Artists Palette magazine, issue number57 ie'......Art appreciation is a very personal thing. I personally enjoyed drifting through the displays and forming my own opinions about the various works.

One painting which spoke to me on an emotional level was Mudgee artist Ross Kurtz' image entitled 'For Sale'. This picture showed a time-worn Australian homestead behind a rusty farm gate, against the backdrop of a harsh outback sky. The sign beside the gate read 'For Sale'......and standing outside the gate with their backs to the audience were four ghostly figures of a farmer and his wife with their two small children. The message in the picture was both strident and touching. It spoke volumes about the pain desperation affecting many people on the land during periods of indeterminable drought.

Most of the finalist's pictures were clever and beautiful. But only one, for me, provoked feelings of understanding, sadness and empathy. It was a valuable piece of art which I found to be both timely and purposeful. .....'
We have just had another successful exhibition 'Art In The Winery' at Robert Stein Wines. This year we invited another local and widely appreciated artist Keith Norris and his students to join us in the exhibition. The response was positive ,and the students appreciated having a venue to show their works.Ross is currently working for his next exhibition in Sydney next year-more details later.

We hope you enjoy viewing images of our work on our newly designed site.

Warwick of Website Expressions has been a great help during the setup period.
